HIV Testing Options in Queensland
You have many options for HIV testing.
In Queensland, HIV and sexual health specialist GP clinics are available, and many are friendly to LGBTIQ+ people and sex workers. Some might bulk bill, but others may not. You can also access Queensland Health sexual health clinics for free testing and other care.
Any GP/doctor can refer you for a laboratory HIV test using a blood sample. You have the right to request a test.
QPP offers free, confidential walk-in testing at our RAPID clinic in Fortitude Valley. We can test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis, as well as HIV. Our tests use just a drop of blood from your fingertip to test for HIV and syphilis. If you test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, we will ask you to collect a urine sample and swabs.
The RAPID clinic is located at 725 Ann St, Fortitude Valley close to the train station and Valley Mall. We’re open from 2:30-5:30pm then 6-8pm Tuesday–Friday and 11:30–2:30pm then 3-5pm on Saturday. We don’t take appointments – just walk in whenever suits you (last visits 7:30pm Tuesday–Friday and 4:30pm Saturday).
All testers at RAPID are members of your community. We come from all kinds of backgrounds and are all experts in HIV and sexual health and wellbeing.
You can also visit RAPID at Wet Spa & Sauna in Bowen Hills from 2–7 pm on Tuesday nights. We offer HIV and syphilis testing on these nights. Full details here.
If you don’t live near a testing clinic, or you’d prefer to test privately, you can order an easy home test. With RAPID’s test kit program, you’ll receive the kit discreetly in the mail, and we’ll talk to you on the phone to help you do the test and understand the results.
The Atomo home HIV test uses just a drop of blood from your fingertip and takes about 15 minutes to give you an accurate result. You can also buy a self test kit from some local pharmacies for a reasonable cost.
