Stigma & Disclosure

The Impacts of HIV Stigma & Discrimination

Stigma begins with the devaluing of a person because of a difference which is attributed with a negative connotation. Put simply, it is about being treated differently because of something about you can’t change.

Stigma and discrimination often go hand in hand, as discrimination often occurs as a result of stigma and stigmatising attitudes. Such as being denied access to a service because of your HIV status. Discriminating against someone because of their HIV status is unlawful in Australia, but unfortunately stigma itself isn’t.

Stigma can disempower many people, and has historically and continues to be experienced by people living with HIV. It is equally important to note that experiences with stigma have forced individuals into situations where they found new skills, strength, community and resilience.

The development of resilience isn’t an excuse or acceptance of stigma, far from it, but a tool we can all use to rise above, call out, educate, and move beyond.
