About QPP

As a peer-based organisation Queensland Positive People (QPP) recognises the centrality of the positive voice and values the importance of the lived experience of HIV.  All that we do at QPP is underpinned by the principles of Greater Involvement of People with HIV (GIPA). 

GIPA principles recognise that people with HIV are integral and central to the HIV response. GIPA values People living with HIV (PLHIV) as a valuable resource providing lived experience and knowledge to help inform the design, implementation and evaluation of programs and services.  

QPP is committed to creating safe and supportive environments for our community members that that are free from stigma and discrimination, promote equity of access and empowerment of individuals. About the Community Advisory Group

The Community Advisory Group (CAG) engages with the diverse community of people with HIV across Queensland and provides a platform through which individual and collective voices can be heard. The CAG assist QPP to identify current and emerging community needs and assists QPP to establish strategic priorities in service delivery, advocacy and health education and information.

Purpose of the Community Advisory Group:

  • Provide advice on strategic priorities for PLHIV to assist in advocacy, service, resource and program development. 
  • Provide feedback on existing services, resources and programs to assist with continuous and quality improvement. 
  • Engage in consultation and co-design processes and opportunities to ensure the diversity of community voices are heard.  
  • Build capacity and connections of leaders within PLHIV communities through statewide consultation, connection and community development. 
  • Mentoring of new and emerging leaders in the PLHIV community through membership of the CAG. 
  • Providing CAG members professional development opportunities to attend training sessions, health and engagement related conferences, forums and events.

Experience and qualities, we are looking for:

  • Lived experience as a person living with HIV. 
  • Active in community, with strong community networks or an interest in developing networks. 
  • Have a sound understanding of local or regional issues that people living with HIV (PLHIV) are experiencing. 
  • Have a strong interest and passion to influence change. 
  • Ability to identify, discuss and/or advise on priority areas and issues relating to the PLHIV community and community partnering/engagement with a problem-solving attitude. 
  • Raise issues and recommendations from community perspectives, to drive community led/co-design projects. 
  • Ability to make a long-term commitment of at least 1 year. 
  • Bring issues and the voices of less heard communities through belonging to or being involved with some of the following communities: 
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 
    • People from non-English speaking backgrounds – Culturally and/or linguistically diverse communities 
    • People who are Medicare ineligible 
    • Women 
    • Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender diverse or intersex  
    • Heterosexual men 
    • Parents with children/youth 
    • Young people 18 – 25 years old 
    • People living long term with HIV 
    • People newly diagnosed with HIV within the last 5 years 
    • People of older age 
    • People living with a disability  
    • Residents of rural or remote areas 
    • People who live with a chronic illness (other than HIV) including mental health issues 
    • Experience of substance misuse and recovery 

Group Responsibilities and Roles

All Community Advisory Group (CAG) members are expected to actively participate in the CAG and bring a community perspective to all discussions and recommendations. Each role has a different requirement in terms of abilities and experience. Listed below are some examples of these variations, which may help you in writing your application.

Experience mentoring or supporting others. 
Possesses a good understanding of matters that affect PLHIV. 
Well-developed understanding of the lived experience of HIV, including the historical contexts in both national and state settings. 
An intention to develop connection within the sections of the HIV community they identify. 
Experience within volunteering or working in the HIV or other community. 
Emerging Community Representative 
Ability to step into an experienced community representative role after their first term. 
Lived experience and connection to a PLHIV community. 
Possesses a basic understanding of matters that affect PLHIV in terms of healthcare, stigma and isolation. 
Some understanding of QPP and the services we provide. 
Willingness to learn and grow. 

Recruitment Process

Below applies/applied to last CAG Recruitment EOI round, ending 4/10/2024.

  • PLHIV from all regions of Queensland are encouraged to apply. 
  • Being a client of a QPP service does not exclude you from being involved in this group.   
  • A wide representation is key to the function of this group. If you foresee or encounter any barriers to applying, please feel free to contact us via info@qpp.org.au or 3013 5555 or 1800 636 241. 
  • All applications will be graded by a panel of QPP staff including PLHIV who will not be members of the advisory group. 
  • We expect to be contacting shortlisted members to have a conversation about their motivations for involvement during the week of the 7th of October.

The last round of recruitments via Expression of Interests closed on 4/10/2204. The below applies/applied to that round of recruitment.

The planned engagement for the group in the upcoming months is as follows: 

October 2024 
First training/orientation session – Week of the 28th of October 

November 2024 
Second training/orientation session – Week of the 11th November 
First CAG meeting – Mid November
